What ‘Self-Care’ Means To Me

Self-care means something different for everyone, but for me it means taking time out from busy everyday schedules and doing something healthy or productive for me.

 

Previously, I was always focused on goals, achievements, and meeting the excessive expectations I had of myself.  Without a doubt, since I was 18 years old and started full-time employment, my happiness and health came last. I struggled to find time to look after myself properly. It was only after leaving my job of 4 years when I was battered from exhaustion and my physical and mental health started declining, that I realised things had to change.

Here are things that I now class as a priority in my life.

 

Having ‘me’ time.

For me, having ‘me’ time is so important. It’s almost as if I need that time away from people to gather my thoughts and ideas. I love having me time, whether it’s doing a workout by myself, chilling at home or going for a stroll around the shops.

 

Eating 3 meals a day.

Wow, this was a struggle for me for so long. Why? I failed to get up early to give myself enough time to eat breakfast. I would work through my lunch break. I would fail to eat dinner because I’d be home so late I’d completely ‘past hunger’. Now I enjoy getting up earlier, eating breakfast, planning my meals better and cooking fresh products at home. I am now the healthiest I have ever been.

 

Having a pamper day/night.

Everyone needs a bit of relaxation sometimes. I enjoy putting my foot spa on, taking a long hot bubble bath and then usual applying my favourite face mask (usually the heated chocolate orange one from Superdrug).

 

Going to the gym/swim.

There’s something about swimming that I find so relaxing. Sometimes I do fail to actually do much of it, but either way I enjoy relaxing in the jacuzzi, sauna and steam. Just having that time to reflect is beneficial.

 

Meditation.

I usually meditate on a night time before bed using the Calm app. I have been using it for around 3 years and I just love it! The relaxing sounds make me go into a complete relaxation state. I’m then able to accept any thoughts before I sleep.

 

Writing in my journal.

I love to gather all my thoughts and idea and just write them down. No matter what it is, writing them down helps me destress and enables me to have a writing rant!
